The roots of
English identity are ancient. England was a cultural entity before it became a political state. Bede wrote his Ecclesiastical History of the
English in the early eighth century. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is the longest continuous record ever written in Europe. Whatever they
were, English people can still recognise and identify, one with another.
